The multidimensionality of second language oral fluency: Interfacing cognitive fluency and utterance fluency

چکیده

Abstract The current study examined the extent to which cognitive fluency (CF) contributes utterance (UF) at level of constructs. A total 128 Japanese-speaking learners English completed four speaking tasks—argumentative task, picture narrative reading-to-speaking and reading-while-listening-to-speaking task—and a battery linguistic knowledge tests, capturing vocabulary size, lexical retrieval speed, sentence construction skills, grammaticality judgments, articulatory speed. Their performance was analyzed in terms breakdown, repair (i.e., UF), scores on tests were used assess students’ L2 resources processing skills CF). Structural equation modeling revealed complex interplay between multidimensionality CF UF task types. speed consistently contributed all aspects across tasks, whereas role varied, depending characteristics.

Second Language Fluency: Judgments on Different Tasks

In this study we determined whether untrained raters’ assessments of fluency in low-proficiency second language speech were related to temporal measures and whether they varied across tasks. We collected speech samples from 20 beginner Mandarin learners of English on picture description, monologue, and dialogue tasks. Temporal measures were made on each sample. Twenty-eight untrained judges rat...

The development of lexical fluency in a second language

A goal of second language (L2) learning is to enable learners to understand and speak L2 words without mediation through the first language (L1). However, psycholinguistic research suggests that lexical candidates are routinely activated in L1 when words in L2 are processed. In this article we describe two experiments that examined the acquisition of L2 lexical fluency. In Experiment 1, two gro...
